Frequently Asked Questions

Is the railroad open to the public?

Unfortunately due to the location on private land the Portola Valley & Alpine railroad is not currently open to the public. If you are looking for a public option we heartily recommend a visit to Golden Gate Live Steamers (GGLS) at Tilden Park in Berkeley, California.  GGLS offers public rides every Sunday from noon - 3 pm and have Open Houses twice-a-year where the members of the Public can get a closer look at their operations.

Are you accepting new members at this time?

Yes, The PV&A is maintained and operated by volunteer members under a charter from the owners of the property.  There are about 65 members, and the club is actively seeking new membership from those interested in the hobby.

What are the requirements to become a member?

The club seeks people who take an active interest in various aspects of the hobby including live steam and diesel/electric operations, track construction and maintenance, rolling stock and locomotive fabrication, scale structure fabrication and repair, and more. Note that no equipment is required to join the club.

Does the railroad ever host outside groups?

We can occasionally host outside groups such as other train clubs, please contact us to find out more.
